2019 Undergraduate Distinction Show
The idea of craft energizes me. It’s how I engage with the world and celebrate my interests. Many of my pieces imbue an element of craft, often relying on a high level of craftsmanship to be successful. It often takes place between other activities and is embedded in my every day. In some aspect, it is about the end product; however, I see value in the process and relationships I build throughout the experience. The idea of craft creates a connection to my family history and home that I’ve started to explore, especially within crafts that are viewed as maternal. My mother has gifted me the knowledge of crochet and has embedded in me a passion for creation. This family history begins with my great-grandmother Viola Becher and informs my current exploration of craft techniques like crochet and sewing.
With textile design, I walk the line of fine art and functionality. Textile works that I complete are meant to be used. There is also delicateness to needle/hook work that also draws me to this type of craft. I want viewers to understand the craftsmanship and time that is poured into every sweater, lace edging, or quilt that I produce.
