Queer Impressions: On Politics!

Queer Impressions: On Politics invited 17 queer printmakers and print-based artists to create politically motivated, queer inspired prints that examine and explore the ties between queerness and politics: past, present and future. This iteration of Queer Impressions, an annual printmaking exchange portfolio, asks participants to engage directly with political histories that have shaped queer life, the urgent realities we face today, and the political possibilities of queer futures.

The exchange portfolio includes prints that challenge systems of visibility and policing; prints that foreground queer joy, survival, mutual aid networks, and resistance; work that confronts current attacks on queer healthcare, bodily autonomy, and education; and prints that respond directly to queer histories: from grassroots zine aesthetics to ACT UP’s visual strategies.

Not only was the exchange portfolio shared with all participating artists, but each print was also wheat pasted in Chicago, Philadelphia, and Denver. Wheat pasting refuses the confines of the gallery space and shows that queerness belongs in the public sphere.
